The lively, family-oriented Grand Strand, a booming resort area along the South Carolina coast, is one of the eastern seaboard's megavacation centers. Myrtle Beach alone accounts for about 40% of the state's tourism revenue. The main attraction, of course, is the broad, beckoning beach -- 60 miles of white sand, stretching from the North Carolina border south to Georgetown, with Myrtle Beach as the hub. All along the Strand you can enjoy shell hunting, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, sailing, surfing, jogging, or just strolling on the beach. And the Strand has something for everyone: more than 100 championship golf courses; excellent seafood restaurants; giant shopping malls and factory outlets; amusement parks, water slides, and arcades; a dozen shipwrecks for divers to explore; campgrounds, most of which are on the beach; plus antique-car and wax museums, the world's largest outdoor sculpture garden, an antique pipe organ and merry-go-round, and a museum dedicated entirely to rice. It has also emerged as a major center for country music, with an expanding number of theaters.

South Carolina has so much to offer visitors, it’s hard to know where to begin to describe its many attractions and amenities. As its east-west borders stretch from the sea to the mountains, the state offers a diverse landscape. South Carolina has always been an ocean playground for weary northern folks who want an escape from winter’s icy blast. For those who play golf, the state is famous for its many courses. It is also one of the choice destinations during the spring when azaleas, wisteria, Carolinian jessamine and other spring flowering bushes and vines turn the state into a flower lover’s paradise.

South Carolina offers enough variety to keep visitors busy for weeks. That should be just long enough to start speaking with a little bit of a southern accent. This is a state of variety, with beautiful beaches, remote islands, charming cities and towns, watery wilderness, great golf, interesting history, watersports, mountains, and much more. From the Lowcountry on the Atlantic coast to the Upcountry in the mountains, South Carolina has something for everyone.

Must See

Santee Cooper: First Baptist Church, Columbia

Santee Cooper: First Baptist Church, Columbia Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the First Baptist Church in Columbia was the site of the first Secession Convention in 1860 which led to the Civil War. The original church, built in 1811, was located at the corner of Sumter and Hampton Streets and was replaced by a second church in 1859. Amazingly, the church survived the “Burning of Columbia” on February 17, 1865, during the Federal occupation. The pulpit furnishings, slave balcony and brick-pillared portico are as they were then.

Up Country: Fort Hill Clemson

Up Country: Fort Hill ClemsonFort Hill was the home of John C. Calhoun, South Carolina's pre-eminent 19th century statesman, from 1825 until his death in 1850. The antebellum plantation home, office and kitchen are furnished mostly with family artifacts. John Caldwell Calhoun's national political career spanned 40 years from 1810 to 1850. Thomas Green Clemson, Calhoun's son-in-law and founder of the University, envisioned "the preservation of the home of the illustrious man who spent his life in the public service of his country." Thomas Clemson willed that Fort Hill "shall always be open for the inspection of visitors."

Historic Charleston: Drayton Hall, Charleston

Historic Charleston: Drayton Hall, CharlestonDrayton Hall is the oldest preserved plantation house in America that is open to the public. Begun in 1738, the historic plantation house stands on a 630-acre site and is one of the finest examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in America. After seven generations, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and numerous hurricanes and earthquakes, the main house remains in nearly original condition. The entire site serves as a testimony to America's heritage.

Up Country: Cowpens National Battlefield

Up Country: Cowpens National BattlefieldA pasturing area at the time of the battle, this Revolutionary War site commemorates the place where Daniel Morgan and his army turned the flanks of Banastre Tarleton's British army. This classic military tactic, known as a double envelopment, was one of only few in history. This victory gave the Patriots the moral support needed to continue fighting and win the Revolution just nine months later. Featured at the battlefield is a walking trail and marked road tour, a picnic ground, and a visitor center with exhibits, memorabilia and a multi-image presentation.

Pee Dee: Coker Experimental Farms, Hartsville

Pee Dee: Coker Experimental Farms, HartsvilleIn 1903 David Coker opened Coker Experimental Farms to develop a cotton-breeding program that would produce long staple cotton that could be grown throughout the South.
