Insider Tip

Blue Hole Scuba Diving

Blue Hole Scuba Diving

While the landscape around Santa Rosa is more semi-arid ranch country than desert, it's true! Santa Rosa is a scuba diving mecca. There's the famous Blue Hole, a geological phenomenon. The natural, bell-shaped pool is 80 feet deep and has astonishing clarity and a constant water temperature of 64 degrees. There's even a training platform at 20 and 25 feet. A privately-operated dive center near the pool provides divers with tank refills, equipment rentals and is one source of permits to use Blue Hole for diving exercises whole year round thanks to the stable water temperature about 61 degrees F.

Out and About in Santa Fe:
At any time of year, there are some excellent options to get you out into the spectacular country surrounding Santa Fe. If you’re a river enthusiast of any kind, then there’s adventure out on the nearby Rio Grande, which offers both kayaking and white water rafting, not to mention great scenery, and guide services are available to lead groups or individuals. Trips can range from a lazy glide past colorful mesas, to a thrilling ride on Class V rapids through the Taos Box, a 17-mile run on the upper Rio Grande. Other rivers include the Pecos, Rio Chama and Jemez. If you prefer more earthbound exercise, there are hiking trails for walks, birdwatching or backpacking that crisscross the nearby Santa Fe and Carson National Forests offering hikes that start and stop right outside of the city or major treks into the Pecos Wilderness (see my journal on hiking for details). Aside from the many adventures on water and foot you can find hereabouts, don’t overlook the other opportunities by way of jeep, bike, on horseback or ski and snowboard in the winter season.

Must See

Bisti Badlands

Bisti Badlands

Also known as the Bisti Wilderness area, it is little visited and largely unknown. The Bisti Badlands covers 4,000 acres of an amazingly scenic and colourful expanse of undulating mounds and unusual eroded rocks, hidden away in the high desert. The word Bisti is a Navajo word meaning badlands. The natural formations seen throughout the Bisti are called “hoodoos”. Hoodoos are fragile and should not be touched or climbed. Hoodoos and the other spectacular formations in the Bisti are formed by what geologist´s term “differential erosion”.

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge is an ideal destination for the devoted bird watcher. Encompassing over 57,000 acres along the Rio Grande, the refuge was created in 1939 as a winter habitat for ducks, geese, sandhill cranes and wading birds. Here, tens of thousands of birds--including sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, and many kinds of ducks--gather each autumn and stay through the winter. Feeding snow geese erupt in explosions of wings when frightened by a stalking coyote, and at dusk, flight after flight of geese and cranes return to roost in the marshes.

Plaza Blanca and Dar al-Islam Mosque

Plaza Blanca and Dar al-Islam MosqueAn Islamic mosque might seem an unlikely place of worship in a region known for its devotion to the faith of the Spanish throne. But if you visit the Dar al Islam mosque, hidden away in the hills of the Rio Chama valley, you will find a stunning structure that seems very much at home in its high-desert environment. In the valley below sits the natural wonder known as Plaza Blanca, also immortalized as “The White Place” in a 1940 painting by O’Keeffe. The sandstone cliffs, spires, and oddly shaped rocks create an otherworldly, contemplative retreat that glows golden in the late-afternoon light. Allow yourself some time to linger as the spot gently embraces you.
