Mild temperatures prevail year round in Mississippi, but March and April are when the azaleas and dogwood come into full bloom. It's also when the state's hundreds of historic homes throw their doors open to visitors. It is, in short, when Mississippi seems best to typify the "Old South." These townwide open houses are known as pilgrimages. Many of these houses are open year round, and you'll find them all over Mississippi, from Holly Springs to Natchez. If you're interested in studying the history of the Civil War, Mississippi has several outstanding sites you should visit. The four most important battlefields in the state are at Brices Cross Roads, Champion Hill, Tupelo, and Vicksburg. With more than 150 campgrounds and six national forests, totaling more than one million acres, Mississippi appeals to anyone who loves the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, bicycling, canoeing, and boating are extremely popular in these areas. One of the most scenic of the national forest areas is in Delta National Forest, north of Vicksburg, where cypress, gum, tupelo, and cottonwood trees grow.

When the Coen brothers were scouting for locations for their hit movie O Brother Where Art Thou?, they came to Mississippi with their heads full of classically "Southern" images gleaned from the writings of William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, and the Depression-era photographs of Walker Evans. And by and large, they found them: deserted roads cutting through infinite plains of cotton fields; creaky shotgun shacks with folks sitting out on the porch; overgrown yards full of chickens, rusting cars and old Coke machines; river baptisms in Spanish moss-covered glades. They're all still to be found in the state once described as "the most Southern place on earth".

Least terns, swallow-tailed kites and sandhill cranes are among 387 species of birds found in Mississippi, and now the local chapter of the Audubon Society has put out a map to help you find them. The new full-colour map highlights 50 bird-watching locations in the state's six southernmost counties, comprising an official coastal birding trail between the state's borders with Louisiana and Alabama.

Sail the Biloxi Channel on a Biloxi Schooner

Sail the Biloxi Channel on a Biloxi Schooner
For a truly unique way of enjoying the Mississippi Gulf Coast, step on board an authentic replica of a Biloxi oyster schooner. These "White Winged Queens" once sailed the Coast from the late 1800's to the early 1900's; however the introduction of marine engines and the changes in oyster harvesting laws caused these beautiful crafts to disappear. The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum has recaptured a piece of history in their two famous schooner, the "Glenn L. Swetman" and the "Mike Sekul". Available for day sailing or charter, the vessels can accommodate weddings, dockside parties, receptions, birthdays, or other special events. Special 2 hour educational trips are offered to school groups at special rates. More about Sailing the Biloxi Channel on a Biloxi Schooner
