Feature Of The Month

The San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo The San Diego Zoo is a brilliantly designed, nurturing environment for both the nearly 4,000 animals who call it home and their hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors. Everything here - from the striking animal habitats among the terrain's natural canyons to the directional signs that reveal a unified and understated aesthetic - is expertly crafted. Stamina is essential for taking it all in: Open-air trams and a Skyfari ride aren't bad ways to see the sights, but on foot is best. With more than 500 animal species on hand (many of them constantly whooping it up), as well as 6,500 plant species, you'll need more than one visit to really appreciate the zoo's exotic charms.

Insider Tip

Japanese Friendship Garden

Japanese Friendship Garden Located in Kelley Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden is a living symbol of the sister city relationship between Okayama, Japan and San Jose, California. The garden, dedicated in October of 1965, is modeled after the world famous Korakuen Garden in Okayama. The garden includes three immense ponds that can be used for reflection. These ponds also hold over 600 koi fish that were originally donated by the Mayor of Okayama. These koi can be fed with food from the dispensers located in the garden. There are a number of waterfalls and narrow streams that connect the three ponds. Other highlights include the entrance gate, a fountain, arched and zig-zagged bridges, rock settings and unusual flowers, shrubs and trees.

Travel Media

Sunshine year-round, miles of white-sand beaches, laid-back friendliness, history and Hispanic culture, and family-oriented outdoor entertainment at SeaWorld and the world-famous San Diego Zoo are enough to draw 26 million visitors annually to "America's finest city." But there's more than meets the eye here. If you look beyond the obvious, you'll discover why many longtime vacationers eventually become residents, and why residents have a hard time ever moving.
